Overcoming disparities on access to quality basic palliative care in the community: partnerships to identify and improve clinical, educational, legal, and economical barriers
Together with the “Saint Gallen” Hospital in Switzerland, we have managed to develop a pilot model of palliative care for cancer patients through family doctors. We have trained almost 170 doctors, of whom approximately 30 offered palliative care for 125 patients in Brașov, Iași, Cluj and Bucharest. The model requires family doctors to participate in an online and offline training program, apply assessment tools specific to palliative care, track and record the oncology patient’s evolution in the national electronic database. At the end of the project, the model was promoted during meetings with institutional representatives in the medical field to be included in the National Cancer Control Plan and in the legislation and funding of services provided by family doctors.
