We analysed the perception of high school students from Drobeta Turnu Severin, as well as of parents and teachers, about participatory democracy and the active involvement of young people in the community. The Swiss experts involved analysed the local context to identify examples of good practices that can be adapted and applied in order to stimulate the participation of young people from Drobeta Turnu Severin.
Based on the two analyses, we have produced the necessary materials (the “”Teacher’s Guide”” and the “”Student’s Handbook””) for the implementation of the “”An hour for democracy”” educational program in the 3 participating high schools. The “”An hour for democracy”” optional was implemented in 8 high school classes, with 222 students benefiting from the knowledge of participatory democracy and active citizenship in 34 non-formal education sessions. More than 190 high school students applied the new knowledge within the democracy club, where they learned through various workshops about different areas: project management, creative recycling, community journalism, preparation for debates and public speaking. Of these, 130 high school students attended the meetings of the Local Council. We also organized a debate contest where 12 students attended a summer school in Switzerland where they had the opportunity to interact with representatives of the political system at the local, cantonal and federal level, but also with young people of their age. Moreover, we organized the National Seminar “”An hour for democracy”” and a training within the Săptămâna Altfel program, supported by the participants in the educational program.
